January Updates

Carney’s Crew News and Updates

Hi Everyone!

It has been a busy few weeks getting ourselves back into a routine after winter break and other days off.  It was nice to finally have a full week of school without any interruptions.

Here are some things happening in our classroom:

Math- We have been focusing on multiplication, multiplication, and more multiplication in unit 4! We have also learned about metric conversions (milliliters/liters, and grams/kilograms), and finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. We will be taking our unit 4 assessment next Wednesday.  Unit 5 will focus on fractions and mixed-number computation.

Writing- We started our informational writing unit by brainstorming all of the characteristics that informational writing should have. Students came up with an amazing list full of expectations that they created for themselves to use throughout the writing unit. Then, we created expert lists full of topics that we know a lot about.  Students had to choose a topic from their expert lists and are currently in the process of making chapter plains for their big topics.  Next week we will discuss paragraph writing, introductions, and conclusions.

Reading- We started our informational unit in reading as well and learned all about text features and how they help us better understand the text we are reading.  Students used Scholastic News Magazines and did a text feature scavenger hunt to help with their understanding. This week we discussed how to “scan and plan” when reading an informational text.  Next week we will learn about main idea and then move into learning about text structures.

Social Studies- We are currently learning about the six physiographic regions of Vermont.  This week we learned where the region is located, the natural resources found in that region, and what the landscape is like. Students partnered up and each read about a different region and then had to present their new learning to the class. Next week we will learn about some of our state symbols and products and their importance to our state.

Greek Plays

Hi All!

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a restful holiday and found ways to stay warm in the crazy cold weather.

To wrap up our Mythology Unit students have been practicing a reader's theater story of Demeter and Persephone.  The four Lighthouse 4th grade classes will be performing them for the Summit House 4th graders on Friday at 1:30 in the cafeteria. You are invited to join us!
